Flying Private for Ski Season – Airports, Aircraft and Pricing

Ski season is one of the busiest periods for private aviation in Europe. Here is what you need to know about airports, aircraft choices, baggage, and timing.

Why private travel makes sense for ski trips

Commercial travel to Alpine ski resorts involves a combination of frustrations: congested airports, inflexible schedules, limited baggage allowances for ski equipment, and long ground transfers. For groups of four or more travelling together, a private jet often makes both practical and economic sense.

The best Alpine airports for private jets

Geneva (GVA)
The primary gateway for the French and Swiss Alps. Serves Verbier, Courchevel, Méribel, Gstaad, and Crans-Montana. Transfer times range from 45 minutes to 2.5 hours depending on resort.
Sion (SIR)
A smaller airport in the Valais canton, closer to Verbier and Zermatt than Geneva. Transfer to Verbier is approximately 45–50 minutes. Has runway limitations that restrict it to smaller aircraft.
Innsbruck (INN)
The closest airport to the Arlberg ski region — St. Anton, Lech, and Zürs. Transfer time to St. Anton is around 1 hour.
Grenoble (GNB)
Serves the French Trois Vallées — Courchevel, Méribel, and Val Thorens. Transfer to Courchevel is approximately 1.5 hours.

Aircraft choice for ski trips

The primary consideration is baggage. A group of four travelling with full ski kit will fill a light jet hold. This is one of the most common reasons ski travellers upgrade to a midsize jet, which offers a substantially larger hold. A midsize jet such as the Citation XLS+ or Praetor 500 is the preferred aircraft for groups of 4–8 with ski equipment.

When to book ski season charters

Christmas and New Year
Book 6–8 weeks ahead minimum. Most expensive period of the year.
February half-term (UK)
Book 4–6 weeks ahead. Very high UK demand to Geneva and Sion.
Regular January/March weekends
Book 2–3 weeks ahead. More availability and competitive pricing.
