How to Charter a Private Jet for the First Time
Private jet charter is simpler than most people expect. This guide walks you through every step — from understanding costs to boarding your flight.
Step 1 — Understand the likely cost
Before contacting a broker, get a sense of what your route should cost. As a rough guide for European routes in 2026:
Short European sector (under 1h)
€8,000 – €14,000
Medium European sector (1–2.5h)
€14,000 – €28,000
Longer European sector (2.5–4h)
€25,000 – €50,000
Transatlantic / long haul
€80,000 – €200,000+
Step 2 — Decide on your requirements
Before approaching a broker, be clear on your basic requirements.
Route
Know your departure city or airport and your destination. Flexibility on departure terminal can affect availability and pricing.
Passenger count
How many people are travelling? This is the primary driver of aircraft category. A group of 4 fits in a light jet; 8 passengers will need a midsize.
Date and time
Your preferred departure date and approximate time. Friday afternoons are the most expensive and most congested time slots across European private aviation.
Luggage
Any unusual baggage — ski equipment, golf clubs, large cases, or pets — should be flagged upfront. Light jets have limited hold space.
Step 3 — Contact a broker
For first-time charterers, working with a reputable broker is strongly recommended. A broker has access to multiple operators and aircraft, can compare options on your behalf, and handles the logistics. Reputable brokers include PrivateFly, Chapman Freeborn, and Air Charter Service.
Step 4 — Review the quote
A charter quote should clearly specify the aircraft type and registration, operator name, departure and arrival airports, flight time, and the total price including all fees. Compare your quote against the indicative range you established in step one.
Step 5 — On the day of travel
Private jet travel is significantly simpler than commercial aviation on the day of travel. You will be directed to a private terminal or FBO. Check-in typically takes 5–15 minutes. Arrive 15–20 minutes before your scheduled departure — the aircraft waits for you.
